Speech Interface Exploiting Nonverbal Information

چکیده

This paper introduces our research on speech interfaces using nonverbal information and examines new possibilities in speech interfaces. Although speech information consists of verbal and nonverbal information, most speech-recognition research has made use of only verbal information. From among nonverbal information, we have focused on hesitation (filled pause) and prosody (voice pitch) to create four speech-interface functions: Speech Completion, Speech Shift, Speech Starter, and Speech Spotter. These functions are based on simple, easy-to-utter rules and can be used without the need for training. By having users intentionally utter nonverbal information according to those rules, we have achieved interfaces that can exploit the potential of speech in various forms.

Speech Interface Exploiting Intentionally-Controlled Nonverbal Speech Information

This paper describes our research on speech interfaces using nonverbal speech information. Although speech information consists of verbal and nonverbal information, most speechrecognition research has made use of only verbal information such as words and sentences. From among nonverbal information, we have focused on hesitation (filled pause) and prosody (voice pitch) to create four speech-inte...

Use of Nonverbal Communication in Dialog System

Understanding human emotions and their nonverbal messages is one of the most necessary and important skills for making the next generation of human-computer interfaces (HCI) easier, more natural and effective. Indeed, the first step toward an automatic emotion sensitive human-computer system having the ability to automatically detect users’ nonverbal signals is the development of an accurate an...

Speech shift: direct speech-input-mode switching through intentional control of voice pitch

This paper describes a speech-input interface function, called speech shift, that enables a user to specify a speech-input mode by simply changing (shifting) voice pitch. While current speech-input interfaces have used only verbal information, we aimed at building a more user-friendly speech interface by making use of nonverbal information, the voice pitch. By intentionally controlling the pitc...

Generating Nonverbal Signals for a Sensitive Artificial Listener

In the Sensitive Artificial Listener project research is performed with the aim to design an embodied agent that not only generates the appropriate nonverbal behaviors that accompany speech, but that also displays verbal and nonverbal behaviors during the production of speech by its conversational partner. Apart from many applications for embodied agents where natural interaction between agent ...

Speech Spotter: On-demand Speech Recognition in Human-Human Conversation on the Telephone or in Face-to-Face Situations / Masataka Goto

This paper describes a novel speech-interface function, called “speech spotter”, which enables a user to enter voice commands into a speech recognizer in the midst of natural human-human conversation. In the past, it has been difficult to use automatic speech recognition in human-human conversation since it was not easy to judge, from only microphone input, whether a user was speaking to anothe...
